PPG PMC has experience in both the new construction and maintenance of the externals and internals of penstocks.

SigmaCover systems are ideal for new construction and for many situations it will be possible to apply a three coat system within a working day. For maintenance it is worth considering ultra-high pressure water jetting as a surface preparation technique, particularly as vacuum recovery systems are now available. UHP heats up the steel surface so that it dries quickly enough to minimise flash rusting and it removes soluble salts, ensuring long-term performance. The PPG PMC range includes a primer (SigmaCover 280 or SigmaCover 1500) that is ideal to follow water-jetting.

Coal tar epoxy coatings are no longer acceptable for this type of application for health and environmental reasons, however the PPG PMC range of solvent free epoxies is ideal for maintaining the internals of penstocks. In addition to the safety benefits of working solvent free, these coatings have also been proven to have a longer service life than the coal tar epoxies formerly used.

Below is a selection of Sigma Protective Coatings product ranges suitable for use in Hydropower projects:
  • SigmaCover
  • SigmaDur
